This office is responsible for encouraging and promoting the study of foreign languages and cultures of other countries at the elementary, secondary, and postsecondary levels in the United States.

The common goal of the Language Resource Centers (LRCs) is to promote the learning and teaching of foreign languages in the United States. The US Department of Education established the first LRCs at US universities in 1990 in response to the growing national need for expertise and competence in foreign languages.

NCLRC is active in the areas of testing, learning strategies,materials development & methodology, technology, professional development, and dissemination of information on commonly and less commonly taught languages. NCLRC is a joint project of Georgetown University,The George Washington University, and the Center for Applied Linguistics.

The NFLC's mission is to improve the capacity of the U.S. to communicate in languages other than English.
