Digital Literacy

This guide provides resources to help community members build essential digital skills. Topics include internet safety, evaluating online information, using digital tools, understanding privacy, and navigating common software and apps.

Introduction

When you create something on a computer -- like a document, picture, or project -- you need to save it so you don't lose your work. Saving and organizing files keeps your computer tidy and makes it easy to find what you need.

Saving Files

1. How to Save a New File

  • After creating something (like typing a document), click File > Save.
  • Choose a location to save it (like Documents or Desktop).
  • Give the file a clear name.
  • Click Save.

Tip: Always give your file a name that tells you what it is (like "GroceryList" instead of "Document1").

2. How to Save Changes

  • Click File > Save again after making edits.
  • Or use the shortcut:
  • Ctrl+S (Windows)
  • Cmd+S (macOS)

Organizing Files

1. Using Folders

  • Folders are like digital "file cabinets" that help you group related files together.
  • To create a folder:
  • Windows: Right-click in the location you want, choose New > Folder.
  • macOS: Right-click and choose New Folder.
  • Name the folder (for example: "School Projects," "Family Photos").

2. Moving Files Into Folders

  • Drag and drop a file into a folder.
  • Or right-click a file, select Cut, then right-click inside the folder and select Paste.

3. Renaming Files and Folders

  • Windows: Right-click the file or folder > Rename.
  • macOS: Click once on the name and wait a second, then type the new name.

Where to Save Files

  • Documents Folder: Best for text documents and spreadsheets.
  • Pictures Folder: Best for photos and images.
  • Desktop: Handy for temporary or very important files you want easy access to.
  • External Storage: Like USB drives or external hard drives for backup copies.

Helpful Tip

Organize files as you go. It's much easier than trying to sort hundreds of files later!
